DOC Sangiovese di Romagna Wine

The Sangiovese is the real symbol of Romagna and is also the first Romagna wine that has obtained the Controlled Denomination of Origin (Decree by the President of the Republic dated July 9, 1967). The origin and name of this wine are controversial and disputed between Romagna and Tuscany.

According to a legend, this dark-ruby wine with garnet hues owes its name to the ancient Romans who called it Sanguis Jovis because of its vigour.

Another hypothesis is that the name would derive from Mount Jupiter, or Colle Jovis, a town located near Santarcangelo (Province of Rimini), where some friars would have cultivated its vine. The legend says that during a feast, a distinguished guest asked the name of the delicious wine he had just been served and a monk immediately invented the name Sanguis Jovis, which would become Sangiovese.

The scent recalls the viola and the taste is dry and slightly bitter. It can be aged for more than ten years. It has different flavors depending on where it comes from, Cesena or Forlì. The first one is refined, the second one is strong and penetrating. It perfectly matches with roast meat, poultry, game and hard cheeses.

DOCG Albana di Romagna Wine

Albana di Romagna is the first Italian wine that has obtained the Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin (April 13, 1987). It is the "Romagna wine" par excellence, of exclusive and traditional production.

The memory of this wine is associated with the historical figure of Galla Placidia, daughter of the Emperor Theodosius who, after having tasted it in a cup of clay, said: "Non di così rozzo calice sei degno, o vino, ma di BERTI IN ORO" or "Oh wine, you do not deserve to be served in such a rough cup, you should be drunk from a gold cup!".

In Romagna, this wine is traditionally served at table in both sweet and soft version, at the end of a meal, together with the traditional ciambella (a ring-shaped cake).
It has a golden straw-yellow colour with a floral and fruity smell, is well-structured and gives a feeling of freshness to the palate. The grape is very suitable for drying, giving birth to a golden coloured wine with hints of apricots and peaches, a sweet and velvety taste and a striking spiced aftertaste. The Passito is however a great dessert wine that can perfectly accompany a typical cheese with strong taste.

DOC Trebbiano di Romagna Wine

Trebbiano di Romagna has obtained the DOC designation in 1973.

This wine has very ancient origins and was already known by the Etruscan, even though the vine has been cultivated in Romagna since many centuries. During the Roman period, it was called Trebulanum and was part of the legionnaires' meal.
The grape was also known as "Trebbiano della fiamma" (Trebbiano of the flame) because during the aging, the part exposed to sunlight takes a reddish color. Later, it became so famous that it appeared on the list of wines to be served during official dinners.
The wine has a very pleasant smell and coolness, and harmonious and quite savory taste.

DOC Cagnina di Romagna Wine

Cagnina di Romagna has obtained the DOC designation in 1988.
This wine has very ancient origins: the red grape was imported from Dalmatia and Istria during the Byzantine era.
This wine can be tasted even a week after vinification.

Traditionally, it is served with roast chestnuts, "drowned" in wine and then pulled up with a spoon, ready to be enjoyed. It recalls the peasant snacks and, during lunch, at dessert time, it perfectly replaces the Albana wine to dip a slice of ciambella in it.
It is a dessert wine with the red color of ripe pomegranate, purple shaded on the rim of the glass. The smell is vinous with clear scents of strawberry, raspberry and marasca cherry; the taste is sweet, fruity and soft.

DOC Pagadebit di Romagna Wine

Pagadebit di Romagna has obtained the DOC designation in 1988.
It is one of the most traditional wines of Romagna, proceeding from the area of Bertinoro.
Its dialectal name has ancient origins and is referred to the remarkable vigor of the plant. The vine was able to ensure a good harvest even in the worst years, so that the peasants could pay for their debts with the suppliers.
It is recommended for fish and shellfish-based dishes, has a slightly straw-yellow color, with greenish hues. It has a floral, fruity and slightly herby smell. The taste is fresh, harmonious and well-balanced.
