Routes of Poets

On the trail of the Supreme Poet

Mentioned for the first time in a parchment dated 24th July 911, the modest Romanesque church of Polenta, at 7 km from Bertinoro, has acquired national importance thanks to Giosuè Carducci and the ode entitled "La Chiesa di Polenta" (The Church of Polenta), where the Poet remembers the hospitality received by Dante Alighieri from Guido Da Polenta ("Did Dante kneel down here?").

From the hill to the mountain, in direction of San Benedetto in Alpe, many scholars believe that Dante had stayed at the Abbey and its hermitage, located above the waterfall of Acquacheta, between 1302 and 1303. That is why the three famous tercets of the Inferno's XVI canto describe minutely the waterfall and its rumble during the thaw season, when the water jump reaches its maximum capacity.

An ancient legend tells that Dante met Beatrice Portinari in Portico di Romagna. It is hard to determine the period of that meeting, but we know that the Portinari's family of Firenze, that of Folco, Beatrice's father, has owned some houses in Portico from 1260 until the XVIII century. Today the "palace of Beatrice Portinari" still exists and is located next to the tower of the Counts Guidi Castle, with parts of the building dating back to the XIII century.

The roots of Pascoli's poetics

"Romagna solatia, sweet home", with these words Giovanni Pascoli celebrates his beloved land, calling it with his own name: San Mauro Pascoli.
The Museo Casa Pascoli (Pascoli's House Museum), national monument since 1924 and owned by the State, is now managed by the Municipality of San Mauro Pascoli  and by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage of Ravenna's Landscape, in collaboration with the Pascoli's Academy and the Domus Pascoli Foundation. In order to enhance the figure and the work of Giovanni Pascoli, the Museum promotes, besides guided tours, documentary exhibitions and workshops, collaborates in the organization of conferences and carries out research, recovery and Pascoli's heritage preservation activities.
Another place related to the poet's life is the marvelous Villa Torlonia, called "The Tower", the Torlonia Princes' farm where the father of Pascoli was administrator and that was the scene of the ambush which led to his tragic death.

Reflections in Marino Moretti's words

One of the "crepuscolari" poets, a post-naturalist novelist, a journalist with fresh and ironic language, Marino Marinetti was born and died in Cesenatico, where the sea water seeps among the houses of the town center.
The Casa Museo of Marino Moretti (House Museum) overlooks the west shore of the Porto Leonardesco. Its interior hosts, besides the original furniture of that time, books, documents and autographs given to the Municipality by the poet and his sister Ines.

For nearly 15 years, Casa Moretti has been housing an important study center on the Italian literature of the twentieth century. Here, workshops and exhibitions take place every year, among them the Biennial Prize for philology, history and criticism on the Italian literature of the XIX and XX centuries organized in October, and the traditional summer exhibition.
