A Literary Itinerary on Bassani's footsteps
Giorgio Bassani, a great Italian writer of the twentieth century, always had the ambition of creating realistic writing when narrating about the city.
The places and sceneries he described in his books are still sufficiently realistic today to allow an exciting "literary Itinerary" through our everyday streets, squares, houses and churches, which constantly bring back the memories of the descriptions found in Bassani's "Ferrara Novel".
His novels are set between the city of Ferrara and the delta of the River Po, among them we can certainly mention the most famous ones: "Il Giardino dei Finzi Contini" (Finzi Contini's Garden) and his last work "L'Airone" ("The Heron").
By walking in the orchards, near Erbe Street, we can find ourselves immersed in great tranquility and when the wind rustles between the leaves or when autumn paints the vegetation with its polychrome hues, we half-close our eyes and easily imagine to be in the spectacular garden, and with some luck hear Micòl and Alberto's bicycles approaching; just as it is easy to catch, in the heron's flight across the silence of the valleys, the spirit of the journey and the essence of the protagonist in the novel by the same name.
