The art of mosaic
Ravenna, a city of incomparable charm and part of the World Human Heritage, has ancient origins and a glorious past. It is the capital of mosaics: the art of mosaics has not originated in Ravenna but here has found its highest expression in a mixture of symbolism and realism, of Roman and Byzantine influences.
Today, this art is still preserved and kept alive by the skillful hands of mosaic workers, who practice in the workshops of the city, and is sponsored by the International Mosaic Documentation Centre (CIDM www.mosaicoravenna.it ) located at the Art Museum of the City where you can admire a rich collection of contemporary mosaics.
Several initiatives are aimed at enhancing the art of mosaic, such as Ravenna Mosaic, the International Festival of Contemporary Mosaic (www.ravennamosaico.it ), that will take place in Ravenna in October 2011; the guided tours at the Workshop Museum with interesting visits to the mosaic workrooms during the summer festival Mosaic by Night.
