Ravenna: unique city, world treasure
Between the V and VIII centuries, Ravenna was the capital of the West Roman Empire, of Theodoric, King of the Visigoths, of the Byzantium Empire in Europe. The magnificence of this period has left important evidence.
But first of all, Ravenna is the city of mosaics. The world richest heritage of mosaics, dating back to the V and VI centuries, is guarded inside its ancient walls.
That is why eight of its early Christian and Byzantine religious buildings have been recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.
The simple outside of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia hides a treasure of infinite stars.
The refined composition that decorates the Neoniano Baptistery is inspired to an educated Hellenistic tradition, which is taken up also in the Arian Baptistery.
The kingship of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo reveals its origins of palatine church, built by Theodoric.
Over a hundred of small birds introduce you in the intimacy of the Chapel of St. Andrew, and majestic is the Mausoleum of Theodoric.
The Basilica of San Vitale guards a portrait of the Byzantine imperial court; out of town, is the imposing and majestic Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe.
