San Domenico Museums
The San Giacomo Apostolo in San Domenico convent complex, currently under restorations, includes the church, designed to host events and exhibitions, and two cloisters. It was designed in 1996 as a picture-gallery and municipal museums building. Since 2006, the civic picture-gallery ancient section was moved to the first floor and it includes works that cover the periods ranging from the XII to XVIII century. The exhibition project takes into account the picture-gallery original identity, coherently combining the paintings on canvas and on boards, frescos, tapestries and sculptures.
The right aisle (first cloister) displays the picture-gallery’s most ancient works, from the works of Forli Master to Beato Angelico, from Antonio Rossellino to Lorenzo di Credi, up to Marco Palmezzano’s "Crucifixion".
The left aisle (second cloister) display works by Palmezzano, Carrari, Zaganelli’s works, a complete set of sixteenth century documents of Forli and Romagna origins, along with detached frescos by Agresti and works by Francesco and Pier Paolo Menzocchi and Modigliani. There are also "Flask with Flowers" attributed today to Tommaso Salini and works by Cagnacci, Cerrini, and Magini.
The museum complex hosted in recent years numerous important international exhibitions, dedicated to "Marco Palmezzano", "Silvestro Lega", "Guido Cagnacci" and "Antonio Canova". The exhibitions will continue in 2011 with a review focused on "Melozzo da Forlì". San Domenico is a museum complex where visitors can immerse themselves in the culture and art within spaces that are fascinating, loaded with history and charm.
