MUSA, Salt Museum

MUSA, located in the Tower of the Salt Warehouse, on the harbor canal, holds a piece of Cervia's history. Born several years ago from the initiative of the Salt Civilization Cultural Group, this museum holds documents, tools and pictures that show the environment and production of salt.
A few items stand out for their importance and uniqueness, such as the wherry, an iron boat used for the transportation of salt, that every year in September leaves the museum on occasion of the Salt Taste event.

The ancient wooden tools used for the production, processing and collection of salt in the ancient salt mine are also of particular interest. An outdoor section integrates the museum. It is the Camillones salt mine, the only one among the 144 salt mines active until 1959 – year in which the production was switched to industrial methods – that still produces salt through manual processing.

The salt mine produces between 500 and 2000 tons of sweet salt per year, thanks to salt workers who, with wooden tools, carry out their activity showing to the tourists the ancient techniques of the past.  Moreover, the Camillone salt mine, since 2004 is a Slow Food protected site.
MUSA is part of the Province of Ravenna Museum Network and it is a well-known quality museum of the Emilia Romagna Region.
