Castrocaro Fortress
On the hill of Castrocaro Village, you will find one of the biggest Italian medieval castles which took 500 years to build. It is a unique example of remarkable architectonic value which has resumed its activities after four centuries of oblivion.
The fortress is a monument of great historical-cultural architectonic value and is one of the most important fort models of the Romagna region since it has been continually renovated starting from the 10th century up to the Renaissance. Today, besides the renovated Court rooms, the Knights' Lodge, the Tower and Prisons, the castle conserves a Historical Museum where visitors can discover the intensity of life in the Fort and the village in the past centuries, through a suggestive guided tour in the midst of documents, finding and works of art.
The Tower of Secrets and Torments is open to visitors, along with the Church of St. Barbara, the Medici arsenal, and the Lord's Castle. The historical Weapons Museum exhibits medieval and renaissance weapons, majolica, decor and paintings. From this enchanting historical dwelling perched on a majestic rocky cliff, you can admire the infinite view dominating the Montone River Valley which opens out to the Adriatic on one side, and the Tuscan-Romagna Apennine mountains on the other.
