The Fortress

The Fortress was built in the first decades of the X century by order of the Bertinoro Counts; thanks to its privileged position, it was one of the most feared defensive locations of its time and a safe haven from enemy attacks. Because of its important strategic location, it was a yearned possession and over the centuries it was the residence of many noble figures (the Cavalcaconte Counts, Federico Barbarossa in 1177, as well as the Malatesta, Sforza, and Borgia families) and from the sixteenth century it became a bishop's residence.

Since 1994, the Fortress hosts the Residential University Center headquarters connected to the Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna where training sessions, seminars and conferences take place. The ground floor hosts the Inter faith Museum, an absolute unique place in Italy, where it is possible to admire rooms dedicated to the places, actions and objects that connect humankind and its history to the worshipping of the three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
